This is why, in the April 2024 edition of the Topic of the Month, we take a closer look at the Commission\u2019s European Green Deal (EGD) flagship project. In this post, we trace its origins and implementation to date, while future instalments focus on some of the Green Deal\u2019s most recent policy initiatives and examine the challenges that lie ahead.<\/p><p>This project was already at the heart of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/SPEECH_19_4230\">speech<\/a>\u00a0that Ursula von der Leyen gave to the European Parliament in July 2019 when she emerged as candidate for the Commission presidency. In her speech, von der Leyen identified planetary health as the \u2018most pressing challenge [\u2026] the greatest responsibility and opportunity of our times\u2019. It was also a project that suited the political moment: this occurred against the background of United States\u2019 withdrawal from the Paris Agreement (<a href=\"https:\/\/trumpwhitehouse.archives.gov\/briefings-statements\/statement-president-trump-paris-climate-accord\/#:~:text=Therefore%2C%20in%20order%20to%20fulfill,are%20fair%20to%20the%20United\">announced<\/a>\u00a0by then-President Trump in June 2017 and formally\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/2017-2021.state.gov\/on-the-u-s-withdrawal-from-the-paris-agreement\/\">initiated<\/a>\u00a0in November 2019), as well as increasing domestic\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2021\/11\/24\/eu-wouldn-t-have-plan-to-be-climate-neutral-without-greta-thunberg-says-frans-timmermans\">pressure<\/a>\u00a0to act more decisively on climate change through movements such as the\u00a0<em>Fridays for Future<\/em>\u00a0protests. Von der Leyen promised bolder EU action on climate change and environmental issues to obtain the support for her candidacy from the European Parliament. This included a pledge to strengthen the EU\u2019s climate target for 2030.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><h4><span style=\"font-size: 12px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-weight:
