(Aren\u2019t they always?) But I\u2019ve got two extra reasons to be thinking about them today.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><div><div class=\"gutenbergContent__content--109b03a769a11e8ae3acbab352a64269 html_2\"><p>First, there\u2019s a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/batteries-and-secure-energy-transitions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special report<\/a>\u00a0from the International Energy Agency all about how crucial batteries are for our future energy systems. The report calls batteries a \u201cmaster key,\u201d meaning they can unlock the potential of other technologies that will help cut emissions. Second, we\u2019re seeing early signs in California of how the technology might be earning that \u201cmaster key\u201d status already by helping renewables play an even bigger role on the grid. So let\u2019s dig into some battery data together.\u00a0<\/p><p>1) Battery storage in the power sector was the fastest-growing commercial energy technology on the planet in 2023.\u00a0<\/p><p>2) Batteries are starting to show exactly how they&#8217;ll play a crucial role on the grid.<\/p><p>3) We need to build a lot more energy storage. Good news: batteries are getting cheaper.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><h4 style=\"font-family: 'Segoe UI', 'Segoe UI Web', Arial, Verdana,
