These energy sources are \u201cclean\u201d with regard to climate change because\u2014unlike fossil fuels\u2014when they produce energy they do not emit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.mit.edu\/explainers\/greenhouse-gases\">greenhouse gases<\/a>, the type of pollution that is warming our planet. The most important of these gases is carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), so \u201cclean\u201d technologies can more precisely be referred to as\u00a0<em>low-carbon<\/em>\u00a0or\u00a0<em>carbon-free<\/em>.<\/p><p>Clean energy technologies are in many ways very different from one another, but none directly emit CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p><p>\u201cA key word there is\u00a0<em>directly<\/em>,\u201d says Jennifer Morris, a principal research scientist at MIT\u2019s Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change and the MIT Energy Initiative.
