But a new study shows that regional-level planning\u00a0using fine-grained weather data, information about energy use, and energy system modeling can make a big difference in the design of such renewable power installations. This also leads to more efficient and economically viable operations.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 15pt; margin-bottom: 22pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; color: #050505;\">The findings show the benefits of coordinating the siting of solar farms, wind farms, and storage systems, taking into account local and temporal variations in wind, sunlight, and energy\u00a0demand to maximize the utilization of renewable resources. This approach can reduce the need for sizable investments in storage, and thus the total system cost, while maximizing availability of clean power when it\u2019s needed, the researchers found.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 15pt; margin-bottom: 22pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\"><span style=\"color: #050505;\">The study,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.crsus.2024.100263\">appearing today in the journal\u00a0<span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Cell Reports Sustainability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #050505;\">, was co-authored by Liying Qiu and Rahman Khorramfar, postdocs in MIT\u2019s Department of\u00a0Civil and Environmental Engineering,\u00a0and professors Saurabh Amin and Michael Howland.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 15pt; margin-bottom: 22pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; color: #050505;\">Qiu, the lead author, says that with the team\u2019s new approach, \u201cwe can harness the resource complementarity, which means that renewable resources of different types, such as wind and solar, or different locations can compensate for each other in time and space.
