At the same time, artificial intelligence technologies could revolutionize energy systems, accelerating the transition to clean power.<\/p><p style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 15pt; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt; color: black;\">\u201cWe\u2019re at a cusp of potentially gigantic change throughout the economy,\u201d said William H. Green, director of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI) and Hoyt C. Hottel Professor in the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering, at MITEI\u2019s Spring Symposium, \u201cAI and energy: Peril and promise,\u201d held on May 13, 2025. The event brought together experts from industry, academia, and government to explore solutions to what Green described as both \u201clocal problems with electric supply and meeting our clean energy targets\u201d while seeking to \u201creap the benefits of AI without some of the harms.\u201d The challenge of data center energy demand and potential benefits of AI to the energy transition is a research priority for MITEI.<\/p><p style=\"margin: 0in; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 11.0pt;\">From the start, the symposium highlighted sobering statistics about AI\u2019s appetite for electricity. After decades of flat electricity demand in the United States, computing centers now consume approximately four percent of the nation\u2019s electricity.
