  • Better Forests, Better Cities

    Better Forests, Better Cities

Cities across the world are reeling from the direct impacts of deforestation and forest degradation. In neighborhoods with low tree cover, higher mortality rates from extreme heat are on the rise, disproportionately affecting poor and marginalized communities. Meanwhile, deforestation and other disturbances to the world’s forests emit an average of 8.1 billion metric tonnes of carbon dioxide every year, contributing to devastating climate impacts in cities across the world.

Smart Charging and Consumer Behavior in the United States

The transportation sector is currently the largest contributor to GHG emissions in the United States, accounting for almost a third of 2020 emissions. It’s easy to assume that the bulk of these emissions are due to industry, freight, or air travel. But actually, emissions from light-duty vehicles (e.g., cars, vans, sport utility vehicles, pickup trucks) are by far the largest contributor to the transportation sector’s emissions footprint (EPA 2022).

  • Physically Fit? How Financial Institutions Can Better Disclose Climate-Related Physical Risks in Line with the Recommendations of the TCFD

Physically Fit? How Financial Institutions Can Better Disclose Climate-Related Physical Risks in Line with the Recommendations of the TCFD

The year 2015 marked the launch of the Paris Agreement, which forms the framework of the current international policy response to address climate change. Subsequently, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) launched the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), which published its recommendations and guidance on assessing and disclosing the risks of climate change by corporates and financial institutions in 2017. The “outside-in” approach of the TCFD’s framework encouraged firms to measure the financial impact of climate change on their businesses. By March 2022, over 1,400 businesses had registered their support of the TCFD, and the recommendations of the Taskforce has become a globally recognized standard for the identification, assessment, and disclosure of climate-related risks.

  • Oil Refining Emissions Cut Points

    Oil Refining Emissions Cut Points

Taking immediate action to cut emissions from oil refineries and petrochemical plants holds the potential for major climate wins in this decisive decade, with a 1 percent reduction equivalent to taking three million gasoline-powered cars off the road. This report outlines the full value chain approach required to decarbonize an industry operationally responsible for 3 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions in 2019 alone.

  • CO2 storage resources and their development

CO2 storage resources and their development

CO2 has been injected into the Earth’s subsurface since the 1970s and dedicated CO2 storage (where CO2 is injected for the purpose of its storage and not for CO2-based enhanced oil recovery) has been occurring since 1996. There are seven commercial-scale dedicated CO2 storage sites today, with more than 100 others in development. Lessons learned from these sites, along with research, pilot and demonstration projects, contribute to our understanding of CO2 storage resources, their assessment and their development into CO2 storage sites.
