  • Singing Inverters Show Electrical Harmony for Renewable Power Systems

Singing Inverters Show Electrical Harmony for Renewable Power Systems

Standing among solar arrays and power grid equipment at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), you might hear a faint, distorted melody buzzing from somewhere. You are not hallucinating—that gray box really is singing the Star Wars Theme, or the ice cream truck song, or Chopin’s Waltz in A minor. Power system engineers are just having some fun with an NREL capability that prevents stability problems on the electrical grid.

Usually, the engineers send another kind of waveform through the inverters and load banks: megawatts of power and voltage vibrations at many frequencies. The purpose of their research is to see how energy devices and the grid interact—to get them «in tune» and prevent dangerous electrical oscillations that show up like screechy feedback or a booming sub-bass.

NREL Selects Manufacturers of Small- and Medium-Sized Wind Turbine Technology for 2022–2023 Funding

When Mike Bergey applied for funding through the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Competitiveness Improvement Project (CIP) in 2012, he was planning to redesign the Bergey Windpower Company’s (Bergey Windpower’s) 10-kilowatt (kW) wind turbine to lower costs, which was necessary to compete with imported solar photovoltaics.

Over the next 10 years and with several CIP awards, Bergey Windpower traveled on a journey of continuous technological improvement made possible through CIP, which is managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on behalf of DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office. These awards helped Bergey Windpower ultimately develop, refine, and certify a new, 15-kW wind turbine.

  • Guide to energy management protocols

    Guide to energy management protocols

As well as benefits from traditional grid load management, electricity demand response/flexibility can realise new opportunities from variable renewable generation. Ubiquitous, cheap, easily deployed, interoperable networking technology can support more flexible demand management than older methods. Using these techniques facilitates demand management at site or household level from an energy management system as well as traditional centralised control from grid operators and aggregators.

  • The coming storm: Building electricity resilience to extreme weather – Policy Recommendations

The coming storm: Building electricity resilience to extreme weather – Policy Recommendations

Policy makers need to take a holistic view to ensure stronger coordination and continuous communication between all power system stakeholders • European countries and their NRAs need to appreciate that to achieve our decarbonisation targets with adapted and adequate resilience levels, they must plan with a long-term horizon and the perspective of a true Energy Union. • The power system is closely interconnected, therefore, the fluent cooperation and development of all elements, notably coordination of services between network operators (TSO and DSO), is of utmost importance, as well as in close coordination with generators and other network users.

  • 2022 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard

    2022 State Energy Efficiency Scorecard

New to the State Scorecard this year is our assessment of industrial energy efficiency policies as well as an expansion of equity-focused scoring metrics across all policy areas to ensure that state leaders are also enacting equitable clean energy policies, processes, and programs. Top finishers in this year’s Scorecard include California, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, and Maine, which was the most-improved state in 2022. The State Scorecard shows that energy efficiency is a key resource in these states and others, with utilities saving 26.6 million MWh of electricity nationwide in 2021.

  • Residential New Construction

    Residential New Construction

Our analysis shows that all-electric, single-family new construction is more economical to build and operate than a home with gas appliances and has lower lifetime emissions in all nine cities studied. This is because mixed-fuel homes have gas furnaces, water heaters, air conditioning, and new gas connection costs. The all-electric home, by comparison, uses a single heat pump system for both heating and cooling and a heat pump water heater. Heat pumps also provide significant carbon and energy savings over gas appliances, resulting in a lower annual utility cost for the all-electric home.
