Accelerating clean energy through Industry 4.0

A new report launched today by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) looks into the opportunities and challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, also referred to as Industry 4.0, to accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy. The report, which was produced in collaboration with the German Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and the Indonesian think tank Sustainability & Resilience.Co (su-re.co), also provides key recommendations for future policies.

Industry 4.0 promises improved methods of production and business models through new technologies, including automation, augmented reality, and the Internet of Things, which could accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in manufacturing, reduce carbon emissions, optimize energy use, and enhance productivity and cost savings. This, in turn, could help tackle major global challenges, such as climate change, the lack of access to clean energy, etc. However, Industry 4.0 also presents challenges that relate to countries’ ability to efficiently and rapidly introduce new technologies in manufacturing processes, and could eventually result in greater inequality. The conditions to be met to ensure that all countries can benefit from the potential of Industry 4.0 to advance sustainable energy are explored in the report.

Staff Report to the Secretary on Electricity Markets and Reliability

Secretary Rick Perry directed his staff to develop a report including an assessment of the reliability and resilience of the electric grid and an overview of the evolution of electricity markets. The study contains a comprehensive analysis and series of recommendations from the Department of Energy staff meant to inform and guide policy makers, regulators, and the general public in future conversations about the challenges America faces.

Securing Cyber Assets: Addressing Urgent Cyber Threats to Critical Infrastructure

Our review of hundreds of studies and interviews with 38 cyber and industry experts revealed an echo chamber, loudly reverberating what needs to be done to secure critical U.S. infrastructure against aggressive and targeted cyber attacks. Cyber is the sole arena where private companies are the front line of defense in a nation-state attack on U.S. infrastructure. When a cyber attack can deliver the same damage or consequences as a kinetic attack, it requires national leadership and close coordination of our collective
    resources, capabilities, and authorities.

  • Identifying Potential Markets for Behind-the-Meter Battery Energy Storage: A Survey of U.S. Demand Charges

Identifying Potential Markets for Behind-the-Meter Battery Energy Storage: A Survey of U.S. Demand Charges

This collaborative paper by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Clean Energy Group details the first comprehensive public analysis of the potential size of the commercial behind-the-meter battery storage market in the United States. The researchers analyzed representative building load profiles against more than 10,000 utility tariffs, finding that over 25 percent of commercial customers across the country may be able to cost-effectively reduce their utility bills with battery storage technologies today.

The researchers looked at the number of commercial customers eligible for utility rate tariffs that included demand charges of $15 or more per kilowatt, an industry benchmark for identifying economic opportunities for behind-the-meter storage. They concluded that approximately 5 million customers were at or above this demand charge threshold. This represents a substantial market opportunity for behind-the-meter battery storage, which can be installed to control peak demand and lower electricity bills by reducing demand charge expenses.

The paper presents these findings, grouped by utility service territory and state, and illustrated in a series of maps and tables.

  • NCSC published factsheet on Indicators of Compromise (IoCs)

NCSC published factsheet on Indicators of Compromise (IoCs)

In order to observe malicious digital activities within an organisation, Indicators of Compromise (IoCs) are a valuable asset. With IoCs, organisations can gain quick insights at central points in the network into malicious digital activities. When your organisation observes these activities, it is important to know what you can do to trace back which system is infected. Obtain as much contextual information with an IoC as possible, so that you get a clear picture of what is happening and how serious this is.

It is important to share IoCs between organisations. By doing so, other organisations will be able to defend themselves against similar incidents. With the TLP classification you define with whom information may be shared and how the recipients may or may not share the information further.

This factsheet describes how you can monitor for IoCs within your organisation and which steps you take when an IoC generates a hit. This factsheet also describes how to deal with confidentiality of IoCs and how you can create IoCs yourself.
