Current climate actions are far from enough to put the world on a path to keep global warming well below 2 degrees. Global emissions increased in 2018 to reach an all-time high – and the longer this continues, the stronger measures will be necessary to reach common goals.

These are some of the findings in the 9th edition of Energy Perspectives, a report published by Equinor to provide a global review of possible macroeconomic and energy market developments towards 2050. The report particularly focuses on the challenges and opportunities related to meeting the world’s energy demand in a sustainable manner.

This document seeks to analyse the regulatory implications of new and developing practices, such as self-consumption, Citizen Energy Communities and Renewable
Energy Communities. CEER developed a regulatory approach to analyse these developments in the energy market.

To input into this process, the National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) were asked to describe current and near-future examples of self-consumers and energy communities in their countries, from both a regulatory and consumers’ perspective.

Emissions from transport remain largely unchanged from 1990 levels,accounting for over a quarter of total UK greenhouse gas emissions, against an economy-wide cut in emissions  of 42 per cent.

SEforALL seeks to bring clarity to a full-systems approach to electrification planning, especially its relationship to social and productive uses of electricity. This report defines “Integrated Electrification Pathways” (IEPs).

By listening intently to policymakers, analyzing success stories, consulting experts and seeking feedback from a wide range of private sector stakeholders, SEforALL has compiled this Integrated Electrification Pathways for Universal Access to Electricity Primer to bring clarity to the sector and de-mystify integrated electrification.

The Renewables 2019 Global Status Report (GSR 2019) marks 15 years since Bonn2004, the landmark international conference that gave rise to REN21. Then, a “coalition of the willing” came together with one objective in mind: to support and accelerate the development of renewable energy.

These publications are the product of the collective work of a robust and dynamic international community of renewable energy contributors, researchers and authors, making the GSR a truly collaborative effort. Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies have experienced cycles of high expectations followed by impractical realities. This time around, however, falling renewable energy and fuel cell prices, stringent climate change requirements and the discrete involvement of China are step changes. The combination of these factors is leading to realistic potential for hydrogen’s role in the Grand Transition.

Having conducted exploratory interviews with leaders from all around the globe, the World Energy Council is featuring eight use cases which illustrate hydrogen’s potential. These range from decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors such as heat, industry and transport to supporting the integration of renewables and providing an energy storage solution.

Over the past two years, Harun Asad has arranged workshops, guest speakers, visits to solar farms, and other activities for the 30-plus members of the Sustainability Leadership Council at the New York. As the company’s head of corporate sustainability, Asad launched the leadership council—comprising department directors.

At quarterly meetings, the group discusses topics such as sustainability’s connections with long-range utility planning, affordability for customers, supply chain, and electrification. The solar farm visits demonstrated more tangibly the importance of sustainability to Con Edison’s core business.

Energy research is a hugely diverse field, cutting across many academic disciplines and exploring a plethora of intertwined socio-technical challenges. We spoke to 59 female energy academics from across career stage, disciplines and institutions to better understand the issues they face.

We also analysed the available data on gender and energy research funding, though due to limited data availability we focussed our analysis on funds distributed by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
