Thriving : Making Cities Green, Resilient, and Inclusive in a Changing Climate

Because of the prosperity they have helped generate, cities have been an important cause of this climate change (Kahn 2010).5 At the same time, this prosperity has helped make cities more resilient to climate change–related shocks and stressors. Cities have also become increasingly vocal advocates of climate action;6 however, in the race between climate change and climate action, climate change retains a commanding lead.

  • Guidelines for Financing a Credible Coal Transition

Guidelines for Financing a Credible Coal Transition

In this context, coal transition mechanisms (CTMs), or financial mechanisms that support an accelerated, managed transition from coal to clean energy, can be critical tools for turning coal phaseout commitments into action. CTMs are gaining significant interest worldwide, from ratepayer-backed bond securitization in the United States to multilateral development bank programs, such as the Asian Development Bank’s Energy Transition Mechanism (ETM) and the Climate Investment Fund’s Accelerating Coal Transition (ACT) Investment Program. Yet these mechanisms also carry risks that could undermine their ability to deliver on their intended outcomes.

  • Warm Home Prescription – Pilot report

Warm Home Prescription – Pilot report

The pilot study ran from December 2021 to March 2022, where 28 people in Gloucestershire with health conditions made worse by living in a cold home were ‘prescribed’ warmth to reduce the risk that the cold would cause harm and hospitalisation. During the same period, over 2,000 people with similar conditions fell ill and were admitted to hospital for emergency treatment, costing the NHS over £6m and straining front line staff dealing with the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

  • Domestic Retrofit: Market Intelligence & Skills Assessment

Domestic Retrofit: Market Intelligence & Skills Assessment

It is a challenging task that lies ahead, and the Greater South-East Net Zero Hub (GSENZH) commissioned Energy Systems Catapult, in partnership with Parity Projects and LCP Delta, to undertake a domestic energy efficiency skills sector assessment. The aim was to help understand the current state of the sector and identify where support is needed to decarbonise domestic properties in line with the Government’s 2050 Net Zero target across the Greater South-East region.

  • Northwest European Hydrogen Monitor

    Northwest European Hydrogen Monitor

The development of renewable and low-emission hydrogen[1] in Northwest Europe is expected to gradually scale up in the short- to medium-term to reach a low-emission hydrogen production capacity target of over 30 GW by 2030. Most of the low-emission hydrogen projects are currently in the early stages of development. Their success will depend to a large extent on the supporting policy and regulatory frameworks, and continuous monitoring of progress. The cost-efficient development of renewable and low-emission hydrogen markets will also necessitate a regional approach in order to maximise the existing synergies amongst national market

  • Renewable solutions in end-uses: Heat pump costs and markets

Renewable solutions in end-uses: Heat pump costs and markets

Unfortunately, data on the costs and performance of heat pumps are difficult to find and, in many cases, unavailable. Policy makers are left having to make important decisions around the energy transition with less than adequate factual data to support their analysis of options for heat provision. It is therefore not uncommon to see economic analyses of heating options focus on only operating cost savings (e.g. IEA, 2019) or making single point cost assumptions for entire regions (e.g. JRC, 2019).

  • To Battle Climate Change, Scientists Tap Into Carbon-Hungry Microorganisms for Clues

To Battle Climate Change, Scientists Tap Into Carbon-Hungry Microorganisms for Clues

Scientists at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated a new technique, modeled after a metabolic process found in some bacteria, for converting carbon dioxide (CO2) into liquid acetate, a key ingredient in “liquid sunlight” or solar fuels produced through artificial photosynthesis.

The new approach, reported in Nature Catalysis, could help advance carbon-free alternatives to fossil fuels linked to global warming and climate change. The work is also the first demonstration of a device that mimics how these bacteria naturally synthesize acetate from electrons and CO2.

  • Q&A: Recycling Electronic Waste Could be a Golden Opportunity

Q&A: Recycling Electronic Waste Could be a Golden Opportunity

That’s according to a new study in Nature Sustainability that projects a dramatic increase in the amount and complexity of U.S. waste electronics in the decade ahead. If not properly recycled, this influx represents a growing cause for environmental concern as it contains many toxic materials, according to study coauthors Peng Peng and Arman Shehabi, two scientists at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).

However, with better end-of-life management, Peng and Shehabi’s work shows electronic waste could also represent a source of valuable metals, namely gold, that could benefit the future economy by offsetting increasing demand for virgin mining.
