The world is drowning in data, and for cities this means either a goldmine or a headache. Used well, with the help of international standards, data can be a powerful tool to meet some of the targets of UN SDG 11, which aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
Around half of the world’s population lives in cities, a figure tipped to rise to 70% by 2050. Sustainability is at the forefront of most city leaders’ minds as they look for ways to optimize resources and reduce carbon emissions. At the same time, they need to provide an acceptable quality of life for their citizens. The United Nations Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs) push has placed cities at the heart of its global 2030 agenda for sustainable development, and aims to meet several targets of SDG 11, which pledges to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
