Eurelectric fully understands the need for and supports an ambitious emissions policy in Europe while ensuring coherence with the latest climate and energy targets set by the ‘Fit-for-55’, and the ‘REPowerEU’ Communication to achieve a better environment and human health in a cost-effective approach. As highlighted by the numerous reports of the European Environmental Agency1, in the last decades, the power sector has undertaken drastic efforts to reduce its non-CO₂ emissions and significantly limit its air pollution. For instance, between 1990 and 2019, emissions of SO₂ and NOx by the electricity industry fell by 95% and 72% respectively, while direct emissions of PM2.5 were reduced by 79%.
