This support includes a comprehensive training program to enable Colombia’s energy sector workforce to integrate growing volumes of variable renewable energy (VRE), technical assistance for integrating distributed energy resources and electric vehicles, regulatory and policy support for clean hydrogen, geothermal, and offshore wind energy, and technical review and design support for the reconstruction of Providencia Island to integrate renewable energy into its grid after the destruction caused by Hurricane Iota. The implementing partners that make up the development team include NREL, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Colombia Mission, USAID’s Scaling Up Renewable Energy program, implemented by Tetra Tech, and the U.S. Energy Association.

There are endless examples of how this played out. Faced with branch closures, for instance, banks made huge digital investments to allow customers to communicate with them on the digital channel of their choice and to perform transactions online. The chosen algorithms are designed to protect information created and transmitted by the Internet of Things (IoT), including its myriad tiny sensors and actuators. They are also designed for other miniature technologies such as implanted medical devices, stress detectors inside roads and bridges, and keyless entry fobs for vehicles. Devices like these need “lightweight cryptography” — protection that uses the limited amount of electronic resources they possess. According to NIST computer scientist Kerry McKay, the newly selected algorithms should be appropriate for most forms of tiny tech.

Duke Energy — the town’s utility — considered building a second feeder line to fix the problem but determined that a microgrid made more sense because, unlike a new line, the microgrid would not disrupt miles of scenic and environmentally sensitive terrain.
