Empowering social media users to assess content helps fight misinformation

When fighting the spread of misinformation, social media platforms typically place most users in the passenger seat. Platforms often use machine-learning algorithms or human fact-checkers to flag false or misinforming content for users.

“Just because this is the status quo doesn’t mean it is the correct way or the only way to do it,” says Farnaz Jahanbakhsh, a graduate student in MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

  • Taking Freight Trucks Electric Would Have Big Economic and Environmental Benefits for India

Taking Freight Trucks Electric Would Have Big Economic and Environmental Benefits for India

Diesel-fueled freight trucks play an outsized role in producing India’s total greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions. While the country has promoted policies to transition to electric vehicles for public transportation buses and cars, batteries that can power such large trucks have been too heavy and expensive to make their electrification possible.

A new study from the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and UCLA shows that advances in battery technology and dramatically decreased battery costs in recent years have changed that. With the right policies and incentives, battery electric trucks would be more affordable to operate than diesel, and India could become a world leader in producing electric vehicles.

  • National Laboratories Launch Buildings Consortium Leveraging Benefits of Thermal and Electrochemical Energy Storage for All Americans

National Laboratories Launch Buildings Consortium Leveraging Benefits of Thermal and Electrochemical Energy Storage for All Americans

Stor4Build is a new consortium on energy storage for buildings that will accelerate the growth, optimization, and deployment of storage technologies. The consortium will be co-led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Cost-effective energy storage is necessary for the large-scale deployment of renewable electricity, electrification, and decarbonization—and essential for meeting clean energy goals. Currently, as much as 50% of electricity consumption in buildings in the United States goes toward meeting thermal loads. Thermal energy storage (TES) solutions show promise as a cost-effective energy storage alternative.

  • Gender Equality in the Off-Grid Solar Sector

Gender Equality in the Off-Grid Solar Sector

The primary objective of the operational handbook is to increase the focus on off-grid energy and women’s role in it at the consumer and enterprise levels. It seeks to increase productive uses of energy with a focus on women as workers in the sector, as farmers, and as business owners. It provides a practical overview of the OGS sector observed through an inclusive lens and highlights flagship projects, promising practices, and lessons learned from practitioners worldwide.

  • A Sure Path To Sustainable Solar, Wind, And Geothermal

A Sure Path To Sustainable Solar, Wind, And Geothermal

The present guidelines lay out a three-phase approach for privately financed sustainable RE projects. In the Planning phase, technical plans are made to enable the country to develop informed RE targets. A sustainable RE program is developed during the Strategy phase. In the Implementation phase, action is taken to execute the sustainable national RE program. This integrated approach enables countries to capitalize on the deployment of RE generation to fight climate change and support energy access but also to promote energy security, keep pace with rapidly growing electricity demand, and foster socioeconomic development.

  • ISGF White Paper on Urgent Need for Standardization of Electricity Distribution Grid in India

ISGF White Paper on Urgent Need for Standardization of Electricity Distribution Grid in India

Public Charging Stations (PCS) for Electric Vehicles (EV) require more than 50 kW power. If every PCS has to bear the cost of cabling and transformers, that will not only delay the installation of PCS but also drive up the capital cost very high which will be the single most constraint in scalingup electric mobility in India. This paper examines the urgent need for common rules and standrads in electricity distribution sector from the perspectives of electric mobility, building flexibility in the grid and the growing power demand of customers to meet the cooling load.
