First and foremost, I would like to thank the IEC for championing a new and disruptive technology like LVDC. Even today, many people worldwide still live without access to electricity. IEC 63318, published in 2022, marked a historic and transformative milestone not only for the IEC but for the global energy access movement. It is the first international standard specifically aimed at LVDC electricity access, and its publication represents a significant stride toward the realization of UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7): Access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
IEC 63318 serves as the foundation for global LVDC standardization, offering system-level requirements that promote the deployment of a safe, scalable and harmonized LVDC infrastructure, particularly benefiting remote and underserved regions. It also directly supports Tier 2 and Tier 3 electricity access as per the World Bank’s Multi-Tier Framework, thereby enabling the powering of essential household appliances beyond mere lighting, offering a meaningful path to electrification for the people currently lacking access, especially in developing countries.
