Para conseguir unas emisiones netas nulas a mediados de siglo, es necesario sustituir los combustibles fósiles como principal fuente de energía por alternativas más sostenibles, como la energía eólica o la solar. Para ello, se necesitan altos niveles de interoperabilidad, es decir, la capacidad de las tecnologías para integrarse sin problemas, comunicarse eficazmente y llevar a cabo tareas para lograr los resultados deseados. Sin embargo, no existe un enfoque universal, y la interoperabilidad en el sistema energético debe determinarse en casos de uso específicos.

This Toolkit note discusses why interoperability is necessary in the energy system, the benefits and challenges to realising interoperability in the energy sector, and the role of policy in fostering interoperability to achieve net-zero emissions in the medium-term. The note argues for greater use of open data to maximise electricity system efficiency, an increase in the use of low-carbon energy, and the minimisation of the long-term costs of increased electricity demand.
